Weber State University Digital Holiday Card
Challenge/Needs
Weber State was looking to continue their tradition of creative online holiday greeting messages for both student body and staff. The lovable Waldo the Wildcat would be the perfect messenger for a message that spanned across holiday traditions in a fun and humorous way.
Strategy/Solutions
I started with a new design of Waldo the Wildcat that appeared fresh and one that was also functional for animation purposes. Background assets of the University setting would also ground the piece in a place beloved by those receiving the online card. Waldo would be pictured in various locations around campus getting into mischief as one might expect from a cartoon-like college mascot. We highlighted gear one would find at the University’s outdoor recreation center in one of the scenes as well as having Waldo interact with the school’s duck pond and a snow covered mountain bench overlooking the winter campus. I created the story board and vector assets and they were masterfully animated by Issac Geockeritz. The exploration of poses, gear and facial expressions led to my creation of a Waldo line up celebrating achievements in sports, science, medicine and the outdoors—all departments at the University with stellar track records.
